Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why should I buy a motor scooter?
  • There are so many great reasons to buy a motor scooter. Here are the three best reasons:

    • Save money on gas. All motor scooters get great gas mileage and within a short period of time, your motor scooter will end up paying for itself!

    • You don’t have to wait for the bus. How many times have you sat at the bus stop and waited 15 minutes or more for the bus to come? Some of those times the bus passes you by because it is full! You can eliminate this problem with a motor scooter!

    • Park right outside of your classroom. Unless you are a graduate student, it is next to impossible to park a car on campus. With a motor scooter you can pull up to the outside of nearly every classroom!

2. What is the difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines?

2 stroke means that you have to mix 2 cycle oil with the gas. In older mopeds, you used to have to physically mix 2 stroke oil with the gasoline at the proper ratio. Newer models now have a separate container for the 2 stroke oil and all you have to do is make sure that the oil tank has oil. The oil is injected into the gasoline at the proper ratio as you drive.

4 stroke means you don't have to deal with any of that. All you have to do is put gas in and go. However, you do have to maintain the motor scooter by getting oil changes when needed.

New Scooters 4 Less is one of the only dealers in Gainesville selling EPA Approved 2008 and 2009 2 stroke scooter models.

3. What are the laws relating to motor scooters?

Buy My Scooter is a Florida based business. The following laws and regulations are related to Florida. If you are from a different state, please understand that the following laws may or may not apply to you. You should check with your local authorities to locate the laws that preside in your particular state.

General Rules for Motor Scooters

The following rules apply to most states. Every states regulations vary so make sure you check with your state's Department of Transportation.

  1. You must have a valid driver's license in order to operate a motor scooter.
  2. If the motor scooter is under 50cc, you only need a standard driver's license. Anything over 50cc is considered a motorcycle and therefore requires a motorcycle endorsement.
  3. Motor scooters are registered vehicles and therefore are supposed to be driven on public roads. Due to the speed, you should never operate a 49cc motor scooter on a highway. Motor scooters should never be operated on bike paths or side walks.
  4. Motor scooters have to be registered and registration must be renewed every year.
  5. Insurance is not required.

In addition to the rules listed above, you should also be aware of these laws in the State of Florida:

  1. New as of 2007: If you are under the age of 21, you are required to wear a helmet when you operate a motor scooter. If you are over 21, you are not required to wear a helmet as long as you have at least $10,000 of medical insurance coverage.

  2. You are required to wear eye protection when you operate a motor scooter. A helmet with a visor would be best.
4. How much does it cost to get my motor scooter registered?
It will cost approximately $60 through a Florida state tag agency. Exact cost depends on your date of purchase and date of birth (because vehicle registrations renew and expire on your birthday). It will cost about $30 to renew your registration after your tags expire. Reminder: Make sure you take cash or a check to the Tag Agency because they do not accept credit cards.

5. Where is the Alachua County Tag Agency?

The address for the agency closest to New Scooters 4 Less is:

12 SE 1st St.
Gainesville, FL 32601 – 5341
(352) 264-6868

You can also get your motor scooter registered at these other tag agencies:

3946 SW Archer Rd.
Gainesville, FL 32608 – 2342
(352) 337-6200

5801 NW 34th Street
Gainesville, FL 32653 – 1777
(352) 374-5263

6. How much is a University of Florida motor scooter parking decal?
A UF parking decal is approximately $65 for 1 year.

7. How many miles per gallon will a motor scooter get?
Each motor scooter is different. The majority of motor scooters get at least 60 miles per gallon. The average is closer to 70 - 80 miles per gallon.

8. How much fuel do motor scooters hold and what type do they use?
Please check the specifications of each scooter. The majority of motor scooters only hold between 1 and 2 gallons. All of the new scooters from New Scooters 4 Less require premium fuel with an octane grade of 93.
9. Do I need to change its oil?
Yes. If your scooter is a 4-stroke scooter, you will need to change its oil. Even though your motor scooter doesn’t need as much maintenance as your car, if you want your motor scooter to last, we suggest getting your oil changed and your carburetor tuned up every few months. A new 4-stroke scooter should have its first oil change within the first 250 miles. After its first oil change, it is best to have it changed at least 3 - 4 times a year depending on how often you drive your motor scooter or every 500 - 750 miles. New Scooters 4 Less offers oil changes for $23.53 (lowest in Gainesville!). Read more about getting your scooter serviced at New Scooters 4 Less.
10. What if I can't get my scooter started with the electric start?
  • Majority of people will only have trouble getting their motor scooter started with the electric start if they have let it sit for a long period of time. If you cannot start your motor scooter with the electric start, try putting your motor scooter up on its center stand. Once you have done so, turn your motor scooter into the on position with the key and try kick starting your motor scooter. It may take several kicks to get your motor scooter to turn over. If you are still having trouble, contact us and we would be happy to assist you. You can bring your battery in and we can charge it for you.

  • Motor scooter batteries are much smaller than car batteries. Therefore, they are going to die quicker. In order to keep your battery charged, we suggest riding your motor scooter often. You may want to invest in a battery charger just in case your battery gets a weak charge. Again, we would be happy to assist as well.
11. How long does a motor scooter last?
Like everything else, how long your motor scooter lasts depends on how well you take care of it. Remember to maintain your scooter by keeping it clean, keeping it out of the rain, and getting the oil changed and carburetor tuned frequently. We highly recommend investing into a motor scooter cover to help keep water and dirt off of your scooter and help keep it in great condition.
12. I just have a mechanical question, can you help?
Yes. Are you having trouble with a motor scooter? Do you have general questions on the parts, service, and maintenance of your motor scooter? Is your motor scooter in for repair at our shop and you want to check on the status? Feel free to contact our mechanic specialists at mechanics@ns4l.com. They will reply back to you as soon as possible.
13. Do I have to be a Buy My Scooter or New Scooters 4 Less customer to purchase a Maintenance Package?
No. Any person who has a motor scooter (and lives in the general Gainesville, FL area), whether new or used, can purchase a maintenance package and we highly recommend it. You receive a bulk price on the maintenance, but your scooter will be well cared for as well. This will lead to a higher resale value if you decide to sell it down the road.

14. If I purchase a motor scooter from another dealer who offers maintenance logs, can this log be placed in my listing on Buy My Scooter?
New Scooters 4 Less and Buy My Scooter were the originators of the Maintenance Log and Maintenance Packages which included these logs in Gainesville, FL. They were created to help students save money on maintenance that their motor scooter will need as well as encourage students to take care of their motor scooters in order to maintain a higher resale value. Since the creation of the Maintenance Logs and Packages, there have been many businesses that often imitate these services. Because we have no way of tracking and guaranteeing the authenticity of other scooter dealer's logs, no other logs kept with these dealers can be placed in a listing on this site. Only Buy My Scooter Maintenance Logs can be included in a person's listing on the site. Call us at (352) 336-1271 to get set up with a Maintenance Log so when you are ready to sell, you can display it in your listing. You might as well... we have the lowest motor scooter service rates in town anyway!
